This note is directed at two students, but I wish you all to be
aware of the message.
There is required attendance in 4.665. "To attend" means
more than to have your body in the room; it means to attend to, to
give your attention to, the speaker. To sleep in the class does not
constitute attendance. The expectation of participation in
discussion may reach beyond the literal meaning of "to
attend," but I did make it part of the requirements of the
subject.
I have tolerated disrespect of me, and even of Nicola. But when you
disrespect your colleagues, colleagues who gave an informed and
spirited presentation, that is too much.
I have asked you, and repeat here: Do not come back to the class
unless you are prepared to attend in the full sense of the word.
The exception to that rule is that, if you are still in the class,
you must come and reward our attention to your part in a group
presentation.
